Here comes the flow!

It's that time of the year that every beekeeper looks forward to: the honey flow.  Here in Middle Tennessee the weather has been odd to say the least. A bit warm with some unexpected cold days throw in. At this point, your colonies should be pulling in alot of nectar and pollen and building up rapidly.  Maples blooming came a bit early but provided some much needed food in this unexpected Middle Tennessee weather. Fruit trees seemed to have faired well despite that early cruel freeze. A bit nervous about the tulip poplar flow with the hard rains we had but fingers crossed.

Keep those hives going and do not forget to add supers! A healthy colony can fill a medium in days on the flow. Although swarming is lessening as we get closer to the flow, always be vigilant.

THINGS WE ARE DOING AROUND THE APIARY
  • Making sure all hives are queenright

  • Ensuring the queen has enough space through frame manipulation

  • Adding supers! Some get one, some get more.

  • Doing splits with oversized colonies to prevent those swarms

  • Watching the weather 😉

  • Keeping an eye out for wild swarms, it's that time!
